What makes a great dock?

All docks are not made equal. Living on an Island brings some interesting challenges to the process of dock building. We pride ourselves on understanding that each dock is as unique as the environment that it will have to perform in and endure. Lake front docks and ocean front docks both come with their own unique challenges and solutions.

Lake Front Docks

The fundamental difference for a dock in the lake shore environment is that the water is not as threatening to the durability and function of the structure. Lake water is usually calmer and gentler than that of ocean water. The one drawback for a lake front system, is that consideration has to be given to the effects of winter on it. Most owners will opt to pull their boat docks out of the water before it freezes and causes damage. That would go for some ramps and approaches as well.

Ocean Front Docks

Waves, salt water, and debris have to be considered when designing an ocean front dock. Anchoring is very important to keep it in place, if the dock is not part of more complex system with an approach and/or a connecting aluminum ramp system. Unlike a lake shore dock, ocean docks can stay in place year round if desired. The threat of damage due to freezing water is not present. However, a big consideration is the level of the tide as it will fluctuate daily.
